On 28 January 2026, ATM-EXCITE and MITRANO held a joint internal workshop on SESAR project synergies and future perspectives. The aim was simple: align on practical collaboration steps that support the wider SESAR community.

The workshop focused on how the projects can reinforce each other. In particular, the teams explored links between operational concepts and the enablers needed to make them work in practice. As a result, ATM-EXCITE and MITRANO agreed to move from discussion to structured collaboration pathways. Next steps cover stakeholder engagement, validation thinking, dissemination alignment, and a light-touch working rhythm.

Why synergies matter across SESAR projects

SESAR projects deliver most value when they connect. That connection reduces duplication. It also strengthens consistency across the programme. In addition, alignment helps stakeholders compare concepts across projects without having to “translate” different assumptions.

This matters even more in civil–military topics. Here, operational coordination and technical foundations are tightly linked. Concepts such as civil–military coordination and civil–military CDM need reliable information flows. At the same time, those flows must be protected. Therefore, interoperability must include security and resilience, not only connectivity.

How ATM-EXCITE and MITRANO complement each other

ATM-EXCITE at a glance

ATM-EXCITE focuses on enabling secure data sharing and interoperability across stakeholders. It also emphasises cyber-resilient interoperability. That means information exchange should remain trustworthy and robust, even under challenging conditions.

This is not only about linking systems. It is also about assurance. Stakeholders need clarity on what is shared, how it is protected, and how it can be used in operational contexts. As a result, secure interoperability becomes a practical enabler for collaboration.

MITRANO at a glance

MITRANO contributes operational concepts that support civil–military integration. This includes mission trajectory management and civil–military CDM. The focus is on coordination: how actors align decisions and planning in a coherent way.

MITRANO’s perspective helps clarify information needs. It also helps frame where and when coordination decisions matter most. Therefore, it provides a strong operational anchor for future validation thinking.

The bridge between the projects is clear: operational needs define the “what,” while secure interoperability enablers support the “how.” Together, they can strengthen civil–military coordination in a way the SESAR community can reuse.

Collaboration pathways identified

The workshop highlighted four practical collaboration pathways. Each pathway aims to create momentum while staying within project boundaries.

Aligned stakeholder engagement. First, the teams explored how to build a shared understanding of stakeholder perspectives. The goal is not to merge activities. Instead, it is to coordinate touchpoints where it makes sense. For example, surveys or interviews can be sequenced and framed consistently. This reduces repeated requests to the same community members.

Joint validation and demonstration opportunities. Next, the projects discussed where validation thinking could connect. The intention is to identify common scenario areas. These scenarios link operational coordination concepts with secure interoperability needs. As a result, both projects can strengthen future evidence-building, while respecting confidentiality and scope.

Aligned communication, dissemination and exploitation. In addition, the teams explored how to cross-amplify relevant outputs. A shared view of key moments helps the community discover results faster. It also helps stakeholders understand how related projects fit together. Moreover, alignment supports coherent messaging across the SESAR calendar.

Maintaining momentum. Finally, the teams discussed how to keep collaboration active. A lightweight approach was preferred. This could include a joint working rhythm and follow-up touchpoints. In practice, the aim is continuity: track actions, revisit synergy points, and share progress when appropriate.

FAQ

What do we mean by “civil–military interoperability” in this context?

In this context, civil–military interoperability means enabling coordination through compatible processes and information exchanges. It also includes trust and resilience in those exchanges. Therefore, it covers both operational alignment and secure technical foundations.

How do SESAR projects turn synergies into validation activities?

Projects first align assumptions and scenario families. Next, they map shared validation questions. As a result, they can plan complementary validation steps and reduce duplication, while keeping project scopes clear.

How can stakeholders stay informed about progress?

The best way is to follow project channels and public dissemination moments. In addition, stakeholders can engage through coordinated outreach when invited. This helps ensure feedback supports realistic validation pathways.
